All you need to know about vertical window awnings

A vertical window awning is an external cover made from special fabric (sometimes called a thermal shield). First of all, it's intended to protect from excessive sunlight, and therefore overheating of rooms. The awnings own these qualities to the fabric that they are made of. It's manufactured from fibre glass, coated with PCV. The fabric is arranged as a mesh of varied thickness that the transparency depends on.

Remaining elements can be made of aluminium alloys, galvanized steel or plastics. They are operated by hand or electrically.

 

Awnings and roller shutters - most important differences

• Over heating of rooms - vertical awnings contribute to lower temperatures in rooms during hot days better than ordinary blinds (sunlight is absorbed in front of the window glass, by the space between the awning's fabric and glazing).

• Sunlight - awnings protect from high temperatures in rooms, but they don't shade them, contrary to the external blinds. Fabrics that the awnings are made of let the natural light go into the room to the extent making it unnecessary to use artificial lights

• Visibility – awnings don't reduce visibility (again, contrary to the blinds), as the don't shade the room completely. When the awning is closed, the room's interior is hidden from the outside, but we can see what happens there.

• Decoration for buildings' façades – awnings are believed to be better in highlighting the architectonic assets of buildings.

• Additional protection – external blinds may be also treated as protection from burglary, and this cannot be offered by awnings.

 

So the awnings are a better choice for those who spend a lot of time at home (working or raising kids), or in companies, offices, at a doctor's, etc. - meaning everywhere you spend a lot of time during a day. Awnings offer comfortable use of natural light, at the same time reducing the ambient temperature. A blind reduces the ambient temperature but also shades the room completely

 

Vertical awnings in UK weather conditions

These awnings are the best match for UK weather conditions. Let's not forget that rooms get hot because of sunlight. Then, if we find out that there are less hot months during a year, it doesn't mean that there's no sunlight during the other months.

Also during winter there are come days with strong sunlight that can make it impossible to work e.g. in front of a computer. In such a situation, the awning, with its capability of letting sunlight in, will be irreplaceable. Furthermore, during autumn/winter, it will help to keep heat inside the room, bring real savings.
