Art deco in the interior decor

« Back to blog

Today's part of the blog is dedicated to another style that will appear in interior design in 2019 - art deco. This is a style that is the complete opposite of the Scandinavian style that has been so fashionable for several years. There is nothing minimalist about it. He will soon celebrate his 100th birthday; fashion often comes full circle and comes back, but this only applies to exceptional things. Characterized by something unique, which we see again after a long absence and which, despite the passage of years, has the ability to fit into the interior, combining tradition with modernity.

The art deco style was the first in history to go around the world; Asian countries, Europe, the United States - art deco elements could be seen everywhere. Its origins must be sought in the 1920s, and it is often called the style of the 1930s. So the crazy interwar period, a time that stimulates the imagination. Elegance, often glamor, beautiful materials, revues, unforgettable music - the 1920s and 1930s have something that cannot be forgotten, and which now also returns to interior design.

Art deco - characteristics

At the outset, it should be noted that art deco is rather reserved for larger spaces; renovated tenement houses with high rooms, apartment buildings with large apartments, houses. It's a style that needs a surface that it won't dominate.

In the intention of the designers, this style was to create a new shape of the classics, it was to be a reflection of post-war economic progress. The beauty of utilitarian objects ceased to dominate over their functionality, and began to complement it. Art deco is nothing more than applied art, an ordered form that is primarily characterized by high quality. Elegance, order, sophisticated details, natural materials (such as wood), glass, crystal, stone - words that are repeated when describing the style.

Art deco is characterized by uniform and subdued colours: white, gray, beige and black. Contemporary art deco is often a combination of light colors with dark accessories and furniture. The furniture itself is massive, but thanks to its proportionality and geometrical form, it does not give the impression of being "heavy". Geometric shapes are varied here - rectangular and round. We have forms with sharp and beveled edges, but also numerous rounded shapes. arched tops or desks, although sharp shapes are more often reserved for this type of furniture, while curves dominate in couches, sofas, armchairs - their streamlined shapes, rounded headrests and backrests are characteristic.

In art deco, furniture surfaces cannot be forgotten, the main decoration of which is decorative veneer, and they are often varnished or enamelled to a high gloss. Sometimes there are additions in the form of gilding, lacquer or mother of pearl. Leisure furniture, on the other hand, is upholstered in smooth fabric or decorated with a simple, geometric pattern; leather is also used in upholstery.

The Art Deco style also means attention to detail in interior finishing. The floors are wooden, and the floors (kitchen, bathroom) are decorated with black and white tiles. Door handles, lamps, chandeliers – everything should be matched. Antique markets and antique shops will certainly be the realm of accessories here.
